Ai Weiwei

Ai Weiwei (born 1957) is a globally renowned Chinese artist celebrated as a disruptor of artistic canons and a champion of free expression. His work ranges across performance, photography, sculpture, video, and installation, deploying humor and provocation to examine history, society, and culture. Ai Weiwei now lives in Portugal, having left China in 2015 after being detained, harassed, and surveilled for several years. His first US retrospective in a decade, 'Ai, Rebel,' is on display at the Seattle Art Museum through September 2025, showcasing over 100 iconic works.
