Mariam Aziza Stephan is a first-generation Afghan American painter based in Greensboro, North Carolina. Her work often portrays abstracted landscapes as a metaphor for sites of upheaval and destruction, with her depicted locales carrying the scars of their histories, and she is currently a professor of painting at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. She received a North Carolina Artist Fellowship and is a Fulbright Scholar Fellow for Painting Bridging Time: The Egyptian Fayum Mummy Portraits.
