Sean Scully

Sean Scully (born June 30, 1945) is an Irish-born American-based artist who lives and works between New York and London. His work has shifted the paradigm in American abstraction from Minimalism towards an emotional form of abstraction, and he is known primarily for large-scale abstract paintings comprised of vertical and horizontal bands, tessellating blocks and geometrical forms, while also working in printmaking, sculpture, watercolour and pastel. On the occasion of his 80th birthday in 2025, major retrospectives are being held worldwide, including at the Bucerius Kunst Forum presenting around 60 works from more than six decades.
