Banbha Quartet Concert in Clifden
String quartet concert featuring works by Haydn, Beckett, and Tchaikovsky at Christ Church Clifden on September 24, 2025.
The Banbha Quartet will perform at Christ Church in Clifden on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at 1:00pm as part of the National String Quartet Foundation's autumn tour. This concert is part of a larger tour that includes stops in Cork, Union Hall, Kilkenny, and Dublin. The program features three distinctive works spanning different periods: Haydn's String Quartet in G major Op.77 No.1 from 1802, described as 'quite simply brilliant' and written during a pivotal moment in string quartet history when Haydn and Beethoven were simultaneously working on new quartets in Vienna. The concert includes a revival of Walter Beckett's elegant 1980 string quartet, previously featured on the Vanbrugh Quartet's 1994 album Ceathrar. Beckett, born in Dublin in 1914, wrote extensively for Radio Éireann and created notable works including the Irish Rhapsody and Falaingin Dances. The program concludes with Tchaikovsky's beloved String Quartet No.1 in D major from 1871, featuring the famous Andante Cantabile that reportedly moved Tolstoy to tears. The Banbha Quartet consists of Lidia Jewloszewicz-Clarke and Maria Ryan on violin, Robin Panter on viola, and Peggy Nolan on cello. This tour is funded by the Arts Council and supported by RTE Lyric FM.
