CEU 35th Anniversary Public Artwork Commission
International call for artists to create a landmark public artwork for Central European University's Vienna campus, €75,000 budget available.
Central European University (CEU) is seeking professional artists worldwide to create a landmark public artwork celebrating the university's 35th anniversary. The commission aims to enliven CEU's Vienna campus in the diverse Favoriten district and symbolize the university's transformative journey from its founding in Prague in 1991, through expulsion from Hungary, to renewal in Vienna. The artwork should capture themes of freedom, critical inquiry, resilience, and community across cultures. Proposals are invited for sculptural, architectural, or interactive works suitable for outdoor display or building façade installation. The total budget including artist's fee is approximately €75,000. Up to three finalists will receive an additional €1,200 each to develop detailed proposals, with potential travel cost coverage. The call is open to professional individual artists and teams with experience in impactful public, sculptural, or site-specific projects. CEU strongly encourages applications from underrepresented artists as part of their commitment to diversity and inclusion. The selection process involves a distinguished jury including French designer Matali Crasset and Swiss performance artist San Keller. The project timeline spans from application through November 2026 unveiling, coinciding with CEU's anniversary celebration.
Submission Guidelines
Open to professional individual artists and teams worldwide with experience in public, sculptural, or site-specific projects. Applicants must be at least 18 years old. Works should be suitable for outdoor display or building façade. No application fee required. Applications from underrepresented artists strongly encouraged.
