Electrify Amherst Utility Box Art Project

Artists invited to create unique paintings on utility boxes in Amherst with $500 stipend plus supplies covered.

Electrify Amherst is returning for another year, inviting artists to create unique and imaginative paintings on utility boxes throughout the city. This program, which began in 2018, was originally devised by the Amherst Public Art Commission and is funded by the Amherst Cultural Council. This fall, three artists will be selected to paint their designs onto designated utility boxes, joining 12 existing boxes that have already been transformed into public art installations. Each selected artist will receive a $500 stipend along with coverage for all painting supplies needed for the project. This is an excellent opportunity for artists to showcase their work in a public setting while contributing to the beautification of the community. The program provides a platform for both professional and emerging artists to engage with public art and reach a broad audience through their street-level installations. The utility boxes serve as unique canvases that allow for creative expression while serving a practical community function. Artists are encouraged to submit proposals that demonstrate creativity, technical skill, and appropriateness for the public setting. The selection process will consider artistic merit, feasibility of the design, and how well the proposed artwork will complement the surrounding environment and existing painted utility boxes in the program.
