Leesburg Lassiter Way Mural Project - Approved

Leesburg Town Council approved two trompe l'oeil murals for Lassiter Way entrances as part of a $15,000 beautification project.

The Leesburg Town Council has approved the installation of two asphalt murals at the entrances to Lassiter Way, following a competitive selection process managed by the Commission on Public Art (COPA). This project is part of the Lassiter Way Beautification Project, funded by a $15,000 grant from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development awarded to Leesburg Movement in June 2024. COPA issued a call for artists in May 2024 and selected two trompe l'oeil-style pieces that produce a 3D visual effect. The murals will be placed at the Loudoun and Market street entrances to Lassiter Way, the alley beside the Town Hall parking garage. The project also includes the installation of hanging lights and additional landscaping enhancements. Despite safety concerns raised by town staff and the Police Chief regarding the 3D effects potentially confusing motorists and pedestrians, the council voted 4-3 to approve the project. The approval came after debate about whether the artistic 3D style might cause people to mistake the murals for actual obstacles, though supporters cited research showing asphalt art correlates with improved safety benefits.
