The Very Hungry Caterpillar Book Bench Art Project

Town of Danville seeks artist to design and paint a public art book bench. $1,000 compensation for Bay Area artists.

The Town of Danville is commissioning an artist to design and paint a book bench for their Town Green as part of a public art initiative to encourage reading and provide community rest spaces. The selected artist will create an original, transformative design covering all surfaces of a 48x38x38 inch bench weighing approximately 110 pounds. The design must be family-appropriate and cannot be direct copies of book covers or illustrations. Artists are responsible for transporting the bench to their studio, providing all painting supplies, and completing the work within the specified timeline. The town will provide the bench and graffiti-resistant varnish. Upon completion, the artist receives $1,000 compensation and full credit for their work, though the town retains ownership and reproduction rights. The finished bench will be unveiled at the Recreation Expo on February 7th at the Danville Library. This opportunity is open to artists aged 16+ residing in the nine Bay Area counties, including high school and college students. Experience with public art is preferred but not required.
