About the Exhibition

The exhibit features a 'secret subject' that inspired Andrew Wyeth for 58 years, with a total of 26 paintings including 15 that have never before been seen by the public. The series includes paintings in egg tempera, watercolors, and drawings. Chief Curator Jaime DeSimone notes that Wyeth employs darker, moodier palettes with deep colors and washes, including over-sized watercolors. In the 1950s, Life Magazine photographer Kosti Ruohomaa accompanied Wyeth to the site, and the resulting article and photographs are also on display. Over 50 years, Wyeth returned repeatedly to paint the Goose River, resulting in many watercolors, studies, pencil works, and 4 major temperas.
