About the Exhibition
An unsanctioned augmented reality exhibition featuring 17 Native artists who digitally intervene in the Metropolitan Museum's American Wing, superimposing Indigenous perspectives and cosmological figures onto 19th-century paintings. The exhibition challenges dominant narratives in American art history by bringing Indigenous voices into galleries long dominated by European settler perspectives. Artists have remade existing works from the Met collection, including landscapes, portraits, and historical scenes, using AR technology to layer pow-wow dancers, spiritual connections, and contemporary Indigenous art over canonical American masterworks.
