Joyce Pensato

A major survey for American painter Joyce Pensato (1941–2019) bringing together some 65 works across five decades, including rarely seen works from the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s. The exhibition traces the development of Pensato's practice, examining the evolution of recurring motifs and characters including Batman drawings from 1976, gestural abstraction in oil from the 1980s, enamel paintings from the early 1990s, and works from the early 2000s to 2019. The exhibition explores the relationship of Pensato's imagery to iconic cartoon and live-action figures ranging from Felix the Cat to Disney animations to South Park characters.
