Monica Rodriguez: Californiana

A site-specific contemporary installation focused on the period of missionization (1769–1833) in present-day California, exploring the enduring impact of this history on the people, land, and culture of California. The exhibition examines how texts and artifacts were used as tools to control, map, and survey people and land during colonization. By translating and refabricating references to historical material, the artist highlights the nostalgia connected with this era and the colonial mindset embedded within.
