About the Exhibition
The exhibition invokes the color-saturated textiles, architecture and food of Mexico and Mexican-American communities in the U.S., exploring Mexican and Mexican-American identity and expression. The exhibition addresses dual identity, what it means to grow up in the US but also be from another country, featuring carefully rendered references to the community's cultural footprint, from a bodega shelf lined with devotional candles found in Latine and Caribbean households to a paleta cart in honor of street vendors. Featured artworks include giant, melting paletas with confrontational elements containing handcuffs or revolvers, and a 22-foot installation in the shape of a pyramid made of gold-painted ice coolers.
