Through Oz
About the Exhibition
The Kranzberg Arts Foundation's Legends' Gallery features iconic pieces of past productions of "The Wiz," including a pair of silver slippers worn by Stephanie Mills in the 1975 original production. The exhibition celebrates the musical through an exploration of fantasy, storytelling and the importance of Black joy in uncertain times. The gallery includes stories and imagery from the 1927 tornado that swept through St. Louis, showcasing references to tornadoes of St. Louis' past and present alongside displays of the joyous energy of "The Wiz" to remind viewers that art can help rejuvenate one's fighting spirit. Featured items include silver slippers from the original Broadway production, set models from the 2018 Muny production, programs from 1975 and 1993 tours, and albums from various productions. An interactive section invites visitors to write and post their reflections on how "The Wiz" has impacted their lives in relation to the tornado.
