2026 Public Art Competition - Naperville Art League

21st annual Public Art Competition themed 'Legato' open to artists 14+. Submit by April 7, 2026 for exhibition and cash prizes.

The Naperville Art League (NAL) announces its 21st annual Public Art Competition, themed 'Legato,' open to both League members and non-members. This marks a departure from NAL's usual exhibition protocol, welcoming a broader artistic community.

Artists aged 14 and above are invited to submit work by April 7, 2026. The competition accepts submissions in any medium, provided they adhere to the 'Legato' theme. Each submission must include an artist statement explaining the correlation between the artwork and the theme. The artist statement is a key component, as it provides context and depth, helping viewers understand the artist's creative interpretation and vision.

Sally Sharp, NAL's president, emphasizes the importance of artist statements: 'People who come to see the show often tell us how much they appreciate reading the artist statements. They say it gives them a better understanding of the story, making it more relatable and personal. We, as the administrators of the exhibit, like the requirement because it creates a more cohesive collection that feels intentional rather than random.'

The exhibition opens to the public on Tuesday, April 14, at the Naperville Fine Art Center & Gallery, located at 508 N. Center Street, Naperville, and runs through May 15, 2026. An awards ceremony and special reception will be held Friday, April 24, from 6-8 PM, where top-ranking artists will receive cash prizes or recognition.

Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to support Loaves and Fishes Community Services. For detailed information and to access the application, visit napervilleartleague.com.
