Art for South Dakota State Buildings Program

South Dakota Arts Council seeks artist submissions for permanent state art collection. One artwork per artist. Deadline March 1, 2026.

The South Dakota Arts Council is actively seeking submissions for the Art for State Buildings Program, a prestigious initiative designed to create a permanent collection for the State of South Dakota while showcasing the exceptional work of talented South Dakota artists. This program focuses on exhibiting artwork in public access areas of state government buildings, with selected pieces to be installed in the Capitol and other state buildings located in Pierre.

The program welcomes any South Dakota artists whose body of work has significantly contributed to the state's cultural heritage and development. Each artist may propose one artwork for purchase consideration. The selection process is rigorous and competitive, with proposals reviewed by an advisory committee appointed to the South Dakota Arts Council.

Selection criteria include: the quality of the proposed work and its relevance to the artist's career; the artwork's connection to South Dakota's environment, history, heritage, or culture; the applicant's professional arts experience; and the physical attributes of the artwork regarding durability and safety in a public setting.

All submissions must be made through the South Dakota Arts Council's online Artwork Archive platform. The complete request for proposal and detailed submission instructions are available at the official website. For technical assistance or questions about the submission process, artists can contact the council directly.
