Art for State Buildings Program - Artist Proposals
South Dakota Arts Council seeks artist submissions for permanent state building art collection. One artwork per artist.
The South Dakota Arts Council is accepting submissions for the Art for State Buildings Program, a prestigious opportunity for South Dakota artists to contribute to the state's cultural heritage. This program was established to create a permanent art collection for the State of South Dakota and showcase the work of talented South Dakota artists in public-access areas of state government buildings.
Selected artworks will be installed in public spaces within the Capitol and other state buildings located in Pierre. The program specifically encourages South Dakota artists whose body of work has significantly contributed to the state's cultural heritage and development to participate.
Each artist may propose one artwork for purchase consideration. Proposals will be evaluated by an advisory committee to the South Dakota Arts Council based on four key criteria: the quality of the proposed work and its relevance to the artist's career; the artwork's connection to South Dakota's environment, history, heritage, or culture; the applicant's professional arts experience; and the physical attributes of the artwork regarding durability and safety in a public setting.
Submissions must be completed through the South Dakota Arts Council's online Artwork Archive platform. Artists should carefully review the complete request for proposal and detailed submission instructions available on the Arts Council website. The program prioritizes artwork that demonstrates both artistic excellence and appropriateness for public institutional spaces.
This is an excellent opportunity for South Dakota artists to gain recognition, have their work permanently displayed in government buildings, and contribute to the state's cultural legacy. The selection process is competitive but transparent, with clear evaluation criteria provided to all applicants.
