Art in the Arches 2026 - Safe Haven Mural Project
ArtHouse Jersey seeks artists, community groups, and school children to create murals at Elizabeth Marina exploring themes of safety, belonging, and connection.
ArtHouse Jersey is launching a call for artists to submit proposals for the 2026 Art in the Arches: Safe Haven project, delivered in partnership with Ports of Jersey. This is the third iteration of the public art initiative transforming Jersey's iconic Elizabeth Marina into an outdoor gallery.
The 2026 theme, 'Safe Haven,' encourages participants to explore ideas of safety, belonging, and connection to the Island, the sea, and one another. Historically, harbours offer both protection and welcome; the project reimagines Elizabeth Marina as both a literal and symbolic safe haven—a place of creativity, inclusivity, and hope.
Participants will include local artists, community groups, and school children, offering diverse perspectives and showcasing local expression. Over the summer, school and community workshops will lead directly into the design and creation of new murals. Each participating artist and group will be assigned a mural arch to design and paint in response to the theme. Prior mural painting experience is not essential.
Mural concepts and designs should reflect the Safe Haven concept, be appropriate for public outdoor contexts, embrace creativity and cultural diversity, explore relationships between land, sea and community, and be visible from a distance. Possible interpretations include sanctuary, home, resilience, natural environment, ocean ecology, cultural identity and migration, and mental health and wellbeing.
The project is curated by artist and educator Jacqueline Rutter. The new 2026 murals will sit alongside works from previous years, creating an exciting and eclectic outdoor gallery. This year's project will draw together work from diverse community participants, fostering community connection, place-making, and participation in public art creation.
