Artist Development Microgrant Program (Canada)
Calgary-based artists can access up to $5,000 for professional development, mentorships, training, and career advancement activities.
The Artist Development Microgrant Program, offered by Calgary Arts Development, provides one-time funding to support Calgary-based individual artists, artist collectives, and cultural workers across all artistic disciplines. With a total fund allocation of $700,000 split into two intakes of $350,000 each, this program aims to help artists enhance their skills, knowledge, and career development to advance their artistic practices in Calgary. The program offers up to $5,000 per applicant and operates through two distinct funding streams. Stream 1: Artistic Professional Development supports mentorships, residencies, and non-degree training that strengthen artistic skills. Stream 2: Career Development and Promotion supports marketing, documentation, networking, strategic planning, and invited industry events. Eligible expenses include training or course fees for non-degree programs, marketing and promotion costs, documentation services such as photography and video production, travel and accommodation for eligible activities, and professional fees or honorariums related to the funded activity. However, the program does not fund artist fees related to creation or presentation of work, post-secondary tuition for degree programs, lost wages, or equipment not directly related to funded activities. Applicants must be 18 years or older, actively pursuing a career in the arts, and engaged in ongoing skill development. They must reside permanently in Calgary for at least six months per year, though artists outside city limits may apply if they maintain meaningful ties with Calgary's artistic communities. Applicants can only have two open grants at a time and may submit only one application per intake. The selection process uses a lottery system where eligible applications are drawn at random until all available funds are allocated. Successful applicants must sign an investment agreement within 30 days and submit a final report within 60 days of project completion.
