Artist Residency Art 'n Fiber 2026
3-week international residency for European textile/fiber artists in Uppsala, Sweden. Grant of 30,000 SEK plus travel allowance.
Region Uppsala, in partnership with the Quilt Academy of Sweden and Uppsala Municipality, invites professional textile and fiber artists from Europe (outside Sweden) to participate in an international artist residency. This unique opportunity fosters individual creativity and encourages international collaboration within the textile and fiber arts community.
The residency runs September 22 – October 13, 2026, for three weeks. Selected artists receive a grant of 30,000 SEK to cover residency and workshop expenses, plus a travel allowance up to 5,000 SEK. A separate payment is provided for an artist talk at Uppsala Art Museum.
Eligible applicants work with modern art expressions and textile/fiber techniques including: textile surface design (fabric printing, dyeing, shibori), piecing, appliqué, quilting, free embroidery, and mixed media incorporating these methods. Projects based on commercial garments, fashion industry, or yarn-based methods (tapestry, weaving, knitting, crochet, trapunto) are excluded.
Accommodation includes a spacious studio, kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom at the Quilt Academy of Sweden, located 15 km north of Uppsala. The nearest suburb (Storvreta) with groceries and train station is 5 km away. Bicycles are provided, and the host offers car rides upon request. Public transportation is limited.
As part of the residency, selected artists must conduct a virtual artist talk at Uppsala Art Museum and lead a mandatory one-day workshop related to their artistic practice. An assisting colleague/partner may accompany the artist if well-justified and approved by the selection committee, though no additional funding is provided.
Note: Insurance and healthcare expenses are not covered, and no meals are included.
