Celebration Flags Project - World Cup 2026
Johnson County seeks 10 artists to design nature-inspired flags for World Cup 2026 public art installation. $1,500 commission per artist.
Johnson County Park and Recreation is calling for artists to participate in the Celebration Flags Project, a public art initiative designed to celebrate the 2026 FIFA World Cup coming to Kansas City. This is a unique opportunity for artists to gain international exposure while contributing to a meaningful community project.
The project will commission 10 artists to design and create a series of nature-inspired flags that celebrate the intersection of creativity and community. The flags will highlight the beautiful landscapes that connect people across the globe. The final installation will consist of 30 large flags that will be displayed at Theatre in the Park at Shawnee Mission Park during the World Cup in summer 2026. Additional flags will also be installed at Meadowbrook Park.
What makes this opportunity particularly valuable is that while the public art project is created to celebrate the 2026 World Cup, the installation will remain in place long after the event concludes, providing lasting recognition for the selected artists' work.
Each selected artist will receive a $1,500 commission for their participation. The Johnson County Park and Recreation Department will provide all necessary materials, including ripstop nylon fabric and required pattern elements, eliminating material costs for the artists.
This is an excellent opportunity for both established and emerging artists to showcase their work on an international stage during a major sporting event that will draw visitors from around the world.
