Cleveland Script Sign Companion Design Competition

Destination Cleveland seeks local artists to design smaller, neighborhood-friendly photo-op sculptures celebrating Cleveland pride.

Destination Cleveland is launching an exciting opportunity for local artists to create a companion to their iconic Cleveland Script signs. The tourism bureau seeks artists to design life-sized photo-op sculptures that will represent the Cleveland brand and encourage visitors and residents to share their love of The Land and its neighborhoods. The project aims to build on the success of the original Script signs, first introduced in 2016, which have become iconic symbols of the city. However, unlike the large-scale originals that require significant space and skyline backdrops, these new sculptures will be smaller and more neighborhood-friendly, allowing the Cleveland brand to expand into various locations throughout the city. Artists must submit applications including a statement of interest and relevant portfolio images by November 21st. A group of finalists will be selected and provided $1,000 stipends to produce project-specific designs. The final artist or artistic team will be chosen in February 2026 and will receive payment for their work, with installation scheduled for summer 2026. The chosen design should be life-sized and include customizable elements that can be adapted for holidays, special events, and to reflect surrounding neighborhoods - similar to the changeable windows in the Script signs or the 'O' in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's 'Long Live Rock' sign. Initial installation sites include Playhouse Square Plaza and CentroVilla25 in the Clark Fulton neighborhood, with plans to expand to public spaces across the city.
