Edwin Way Teale Trail Wood Artist-In-Residence

Six-week summer residency for writers and visual artists at historic naturalist's home in Hampton, Connecticut.

The Edwin Way Teale Artists in Residence Program, established in 2012 at Trail Wood, invites writers and visual artists to participate in week-long creative residencies at the historic home of Pulitzer Prize-winning naturalist writer and photographer Edwin Way Teale and his wife, Nellie Donovan Teale.

Participants will experience creative solitude inspired by the site's natural beauty and its significant role in American natural history writing. The program provides access to Edwin's preserved writing study in the main house (maintained as it was at his death in 1980) and his rustic writing cabin, creating an immersive environment for artistic development.

The program accepts six residents annually: three writers and three visual artists. Residencies are offered for six weeks during July and August. Artists are encouraged to practice their craft while drawing inspiration from the natural surroundings and the legacy of Edwin Way Teale's work.

Applications are accepted from early January through March 1 for the upcoming summer residencies. Finalists are selected through a juried process, with all applicants notified by mid-April. There is a $25 application fee, and accepted applicants are asked to contribute a $100 donation to support the property's maintenance.

For inspiration and insight into the residency experience, interested artists can review Trail Wood Reflections, a commemorative publication available in PDF and paperback formats at the Center at Pomfret.
