EMBracing the Ocean Artist-in-Residence 2026-2027

Global artists invited for 12-month art-science residency. €10,000 grant. Collaborate with marine scientists on ocean sustainability projects.

EMBracing the Ocean is an international artist-in-residence programme led by the European Marine Board (EMB) that supports art-science co-creation to raise societal awareness of the ocean, inspire sustainable behaviours, and contribute fresh perspectives to marine science. Two awardees will be selected, each receiving a €10,000 grant for a 12-month primarily remote residency. The programme welcomes individual artists and creative groups from any country working across visual arts, literary arts, performing arts, traditional or indigenous arts, and interdisciplinary practices. Both emerging and established artists are encouraged to apply. The funding covers artist fees, materials and production costs, travel expenses, promotional materials, and compensation for collaborating scientists. Artists and scientists work as equal partners, exchanging ideas and generating new insights through creative interpretation of scientific research. The residency format is primarily remote but may include visits to collaborating researchers and participation in relevant events. Applications should focus on ocean sustainability or marine science, demonstrate meaningful co-creation with scientists, explain how artistic practice contributes new perspectives, and highlight societal impact. Applicants must identify scientific collaborators, prepare a provisional budget, and demonstrate project feasibility with clear deliverables and a communication plan. Prior collaboration with scientists or work related to ocean themes is advantageous but not mandatory.
