Erewash Street Art Mural Project

Erewash Borough Council invites artists to create commissioned street art murals with £50k funding. Share your ideas on desired subjects and styles.

Erewash Borough Council is launching an exciting Street Art Project, investing £50,000 from the Erewash Investment Fund to commission street art murals throughout the borough. This initiative aims to enhance the visual appeal of public spaces while fostering community pride and engagement.

Unlike graffiti, which is created anonymously and without permission, street art murals are commissioned artworks that depict local history, celebrate notable community members, and express the identity of specific areas. Artists selected for this project will engage directly with local communities around mural locations to ensure the artwork resonates with residents and reflects the character of each neighborhood.

The council is currently inviting residents to participate in a short online survey to share their preferences regarding art subjects and styles they would like to see featured in murals. This community input will directly influence the direction and themes of the commissioned works.

The project will initially focus on locations in Ilkeston and Long Eaton. Survey results will be published in early 2026, along with information about where residents can view the completed murals.

Counsellor Mark Alfrey, Lead Member for Environment, emphasizes that this project represents a significant investment in public art that will beautify the borough while encouraging community pride in local areas. The Street Art Project is part of the broader Erewash Investment Fund, a £2 million initiative designed to strengthen communities and create a more vibrant future for all residents.
