Fall of Freedom: Arts & Activism Event
Two-day gathering at Sacramento Poetry Center featuring open-mic readings, art exhibits, and community discussions on freedom and resistance.
The Fall of Freedom was a two-day grassroots arts event held at Sacramento Poetry Center on November 21-22, 2025, as part of a national initiative with over 600 simultaneous events across the country. The event brought together seasoned and emerging artists to participate in open-mic readings addressing political and social justice themes, including critiques of authoritarianism, mass deportation concerns, and reflections on racism, erasure, and grief.
The Sacramento iteration was spearheaded by the Sacramento Poor People's Campaign and featured multiple components: open-mic poetry readings both nights with themes centered on justice and freedom; a solutions-focused discussion forum; and collaborative art exhibits from Sacramento Poderosas, Art of Resistance, and The Community Collective. Notable artwork included award-winning immigrant rights paintings by muralist Ruby Chacón featuring QR codes linking to Know Your Rights information.
The I Street Art Studios also participated with a three-day Fall of Freedom exhibit alongside spoken word and musical performances. The Sacramento Raging Grannies performed creative reinterpretations of popular songs with political messages. The event emphasized artistic inclusivity, welcoming all voices to resistance, particularly those experiencing marginalization including hunger and homelessness. The free event demonstrated how art and activism unite communities and engage people in social change conversations.
