Fresno Traffic Box Mural Initiative
Artists can earn up to $3,000 transforming traffic boxes into murals across Fresno. Pilot project features 20 boxes with themed designs.
The City of Fresno is launching a Beautify Fresno initiative calling all artists—seasoned or beginner—to transform plain traffic boxes into vibrant murals that reflect the city's pride and community character. This pilot project aims to address the issue of traffic boxes becoming graffiti magnets by converting them into artistic displays.
The initiative features 20 traffic boxes located throughout Central Fresno, with specific themes assigned to different areas. For example, approximately 2/3 of the boxes along Shaw and Cedar avenues leading up to Fresno State will feature Bulldog Pride themes. Each set of boxes in any given area is provided with a themed guideline to help artists create cohesive work.
Artists can apply beginning Wednesday and have the opportunity to work on up to three boxes. Each completed artwork receives a $1,000 stipend, meaning artists can earn up to $3,000 total. The city allocated approximately $100,000 for this project, demonstrating significant investment in community beautification and supporting local artists.
Artwork submissions can include painting, digital art, collage, photography, and other media formats. Selected artwork will be converted into vinyl wraps for installation on the traffic boxes. All submissions must follow theme guidelines and avoid controversial imagery to be considered for selection.
While anyone is welcome to apply, Fresno-based artists are heavily encouraged to participate. This pilot project is intended to be the first phase of a larger city-wide initiative, with plans to transform many more traffic boxes in the future. The goal is to foster community pride, promote neighborhood character, and involve local artists in beautifying the city.
