Hui Mo'olelo: Lāhainā Film Fest - Free Community Event

Free public screening of animated short films celebrating Lāhainā's history, culture, and community stories with Q&A session.

Hui Mo'olelo: Lāhainā Film Fest is a free public community event presented by Maui Public Art Corps in collaboration with the County of Maui and Lahaina Restoration Foundation. The festival will take place on Saturday, November 29, 2025, from 3:30 to 5:30 PM at ProArts Playhouse in Kīhei.

This event showcases a collection of animated short films (3 to 15 minutes each) that celebrate the rich history, culture, and sense of place of Lāhainā. The films are the result of the Hui Mo'olelo program, a partnership that pairs storytellers with intergenerational partners to record memories rooted in special sites throughout Maui County.

The animated shorts feature the voices of Lāhainā community members sharing their personal stories and connections to the region. Featured storytellers include Jennifer Freeland, Louis Garcia III, Teva Medeiros, Coach Earle Kukahiko, Abraham "Snake" Ah Hee, Reverend Gensho Hara, Sally Ann Delos Reyes, and Theo Morrison (Executive Director of Lahaina Restoration Foundation).

The event will be emceed by Kalapana Kollars, Cultural Programs Director at Lahaina Restoration Foundation, and will include a Q&A session with the storytellers. This is an opportunity for the community to connect, listen, reflect, and share stories that strengthen the bonds defining Lāhainā's identity.

Seating is limited to the first 120 attendees, so early arrival is strongly recommended to ensure a seat. This is a free event open to the public.
