Imperial Beach Pier Splash Pad Artwork Commission
Port of San Diego seeks artists to create artwork for new $1.8M splash pad at Portwood Pier Plaza in Imperial Beach.
The Port of San Diego has issued a call for artists to develop artwork for a new splash pad that will be installed at Portwood Pier Plaza in Imperial Beach. This opportunity is part of a larger effort by the port and city to improve and beautify the Imperial Beach Pier and adjacent plaza areas. The splash pad project was approved by the Board of Port Commissioners in April 2024 with a substantial $1.8 million budget. The project timeline anticipates construction beginning early 2026 and completion by late 2026, pending design and permitting processes. Artists from San Diego, Imperial, Orange, and Riverside counties are eligible to apply, with special encouragement for Imperial Beach residents. The goal is to create artwork that presents a welcoming feeling of belonging and resonates with the community. This commission represents a significant opportunity for artists to contribute to a major public infrastructure project that will serve families and visitors to the popular Imperial Beach area. The splash pad will be a permanent installation that combines functional water features with artistic elements, creating both recreational opportunities and cultural enrichment for the community.
