Indigenous Artist in Residence 2026

City of Regina invites Indigenous artists to apply for paid residency supporting artistic creation, community engagement, and cultural continuity.

The City of Regina is pleased to announce the 2026 Indigenous Artist in Residence program, now in its fifth year of supporting Indigenous creatives. This prestigious opportunity invites First Nations, Inuit, and Métis artists currently living in Regina to apply for a paid residency position that emphasizes artistic development, community collaboration, and cultural preservation.

The program will support five Indigenous artists through a comprehensive residency experience from June to October 2026. Selected artists will have the opportunity to create new works specifically for the City of Regina's Civic Art Collection while leading meaningful community engagement activities. The residency is designed to facilitate reconciliation by creating dedicated space for Indigenous artists to share their stories, knowledge, and unique perspectives with the broader community.

The 2026 cohort will be guided by the thematic framework of "belonging, kinship and continuity," encouraging participating artists to explore connections to place, examine relationships, and explore the transmission of cultural knowledge across generations. Artists working in all mediums—whether visual arts, performance, digital media, or other creative disciplines—are welcome and encouraged to apply.

Participants will have access to the Neil Balkwill Civic Arts Centre, where they will conduct public workshops and host community engagement activities throughout the residency period. This provides valuable opportunities for direct interaction between artists and community members. The residency culminates in a final exhibition showcasing all new works created by the 2026 Indigenous Artists in Residence, to be held at the Art Gallery of Regina in December 2026.

Both emerging and established Indigenous artists are eligible to apply. This is an excellent opportunity for artists seeking professional development, expanded audience reach, and support for their artistic practice. The paid residency removes financial barriers, allowing artists to focus entirely on their creative work and community engagement without the pressure of supplementary income.
