Intramediterranea Artist Residency 2026 Italy

Terracate invites up to 10 artists of any age or nationality to a free one-week residency in the underground oil mills of Matino, Salento, Italy.

Deadline: June 15, 2026

The Terracate association is organizing Intramediterranea, a one-week immersive artist residency in Matino, in the Salento area of Puglia, Italy, taking place July 4 to 11, 2026. The residency unfolds in the town's underground oil mills (ipogei) and the Marchesale Palace, connecting contemporary artistic practice with the historical memory of the territory. Up to 10 artists, both emerging and established, are invited to inhabit and reinterpret these spaces using their preferred contemporary languages.

The call is open to artists of any age or nationality. There is no fee to apply, and the organization provides accommodation and practical support for the residency period. Accepted practices include performance, music and sound art, dance, painting, installation, photography, video art, and multidisciplinary approaches. The residency offers seven days of research and production, artistic and curatorial support, guided visits to the ipogei and local historical sites, talks and potential workshops, peer exchange, and a final public presentation.

The theme is underground memory: the ipogei evoke an ancient relationship with the land, while the Marchesale Palace preserves knowledge across generations, and artists are encouraged to reinterpret these places through contemporary expression. Applications are made through the online form, and selected artists will be notified after June 16, 2026. Participation is unpaid, but the organization covers accommodation and logistics during the residency.
