Journeys of Belonging: Art in Transit Exhibition
UNESCO Cairo invites Sudanese artists in Egypt to exhibit work exploring migration, identity and belonging at the Italian Cultural Institute.
UNESCO Cairo, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute and Mazra'a Network for Arts & Culture, is opening a call for Sudanese artists currently residing in Egypt to participate in 'Journeys of Belonging: Art in Transit', a significant exhibition dedicated to celebrating migrant communities and their cultural contributions.
The exhibition will officially open on December 18th, 2025, at the Italian Cultural Institute in Cairo. This timing is deliberate, coinciding with International Migrants Day, which amplifies the exhibition's focus on recognizing the resilience and profound cultural presence of migrant communities, particularly Sudanese artists whose creative work has substantially influenced Egypt's art, music, and wider cultural landscape.
The curatorial focus of this exhibition emphasizes themes of migration, identity, and belonging. The organisers are actively seeking artworks that explore these interconnected concepts, aiming to create meaningful dialogue and cultural exchange between migrant and host communities. This provides an important platform for Sudanese artists to share their perspectives and experiences through visual and creative expression.
Submission Details:
- Artists may submit up to five pieces of work
- Works must have been produced between 2024 and 2025
- Submissions are accepted in any medium (visual art, mixed media, installation, etc.)
- Submission deadline: December 1st, 2025
This is an excellent opportunity for Sudanese artists in Egypt to gain exposure, contribute to an important cultural conversation, and have their work showcased at a prestigious venue. The exhibition represents a collaborative effort by three respected cultural organizations committed to promoting artistic dialogue and cross-cultural understanding.
