Lions on the Loose Art Trail Design Competition
St Clare Hospice seeks amateur and professional artists to design one of 30 lion sculptures for a public art trail in Harlow and Epping summer 2026.
St Clare Hospice is launching an exciting call for artists to participate in Lions on the Loose, a major public art trail featuring 30 uniquely decorated lion sculptures that will roam the streets of Harlow and Epping in summer 2026. This is a collaboration between St Clare Hospice and global art producers Wild in Art.
The project invites both amateur and professional artists to submit designs that will transform blank canvas lion sculptures into vibrant works of art. The initiative has already unveiled the first sculpture—a Care Bears themed masterpiece created by Murwalls, a Harlow-based artist collective, which serves as inspiration for potential participants.
The art trail will be completely free and accessible to the public, turning everyday streets into open-air galleries. Each uniquely designed lion will be displayed for 8 weeks during summer 2026. Following the trail period, St Clare Hospice will host an auction event where the magnificent sculptures will be sold, with proceeds benefiting the charity.
This is a prestigious opportunity with significant exposure. Previous Wild in Art trails have attracted thousands of visitors, and participating artists gain visibility and recognition for their work in a public setting rather than confined to gallery walls. The project has attracted notable contributors in the past, including celebrities and renowned artists.
A Meet The Muse information evening is scheduled for Thursday, November 13th for interested artists to learn more about the submission process and ask questions. The learning programme also includes opportunities for schools to paint mini versions of the lion sculptures.
Submission deadline is January 4th, 2026. Artists interested in sponsoring a lion or learning more should visit lionsontheloose.co.uk or contact the Trail Coordinator.
