Melvin Franklin Mural Artist Selection

Mobile Arts Council seeks artist to create mural honoring Temptations bass singer Melvin Franklin on MLK Boulevard.

The Mobile Arts Council is launching a call for artists to create a mural honoring Melvin Franklin, the legendary bass singer of The Temptations. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to public art while celebrating an important cultural figure with deep roots in Mobile, Alabama.

Melvin Franklin was born in Montgomery but raised on Congress Street in Mobile, making him an integral part of the city's cultural heritage. The Mobile Arts Council is working directly with Franklin's family to select an artist who can capture his legacy and significance through a mural.

The mural will be prominently displayed on the northwest-facing wall of the International Longshoremen's Association Local 1410, located on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, just blocks from downtown Mobile. This high-visibility location ensures the artwork will be seen by many community members and visitors.

This opportunity is ideal for artists interested in public art, community engagement, and cultural commemoration. The project represents a meaningful way to honor an influential musician while contributing to Mobile's public art landscape. Artists selected for this project will have their work displayed in a central community location, gaining visibility and recognition for their artistic contributions.

The Mobile Arts Council is managing the application and selection process in collaboration with the Franklin family, ensuring that the chosen artist's vision aligns with the family's wishes and the community's values. This is an excellent opportunity for emerging and established artists to showcase their talent on a significant public art project.
