Mountainmade in Galax: Mural Design Call

City of Galax Public Art Committee seeks mural designs celebrating music, art, outdoors, history and diversity for downtown locations.

The City of Galax Public Art Committee is launching "Mountainmade in Galax: Music Art & Outdoors," a call for mural designs to be created throughout downtown Galax. This initiative is led by representatives from the City of Galax, City Council, Chestnut Creek School of the Arts, Department of Tourism, Arts Council of the Twin Counties, community advocates, and gallery owners, in partnership with the Design Committee of the Main Street Board.

Phase I focuses on a "Welcome to Galax" mural on the Jackson Hewitt Building, the wall across from the Dairy Bar, and Cornerstone Church. Approved themes include music, art, outdoors, history, and diversity. Artists are encouraged to create designs that communicate the city's values and reflect its authentic character.

Key requirements include: designs must not exceed 24" x 36", each design should incorporate a hidden galax leaf as part of a planned scavenger hunt, and artists are encouraged to involve the community in the painting and/or interaction with murals. All pieces should be fully accessible.

Submissions must include a design entry, artist statement, quote to create and install, and a resume reflecting experience with mural painting and related references. Entries will be displayed March 18-May 13 at The Galax Library, where community members will vote on their favorites. Winners will be announced May 15 based on People's Choice votes and Public Art Committee standards.

Winning artists will have six months (by November) to complete their work. Murals will be painted with outdoor paint and sealed for preservation or printed on weather-impervious material based on site location. Polyurethane will be professionally applied for protection.
