North Common Shipping Container Public Art Mural
Lowell artists invited to design a mural wrap for a purple shipping container at North Common. Two-step selection with public voting.
The City of Lowell is inviting Lowell-practicing artists to submit qualifications for a public art project at North Common. This exciting opportunity will result in a mural or wrap design on the new purple shipping container concessions stand, located near the DCR Pool at North Common.
The project is managed by the Department of Planning and Development in collaboration with the Office of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (CASE) and will follow a competitive two-step selection process. In the first phase, three artists will be selected to create graphic proposals based on their submitted qualifications. In the second phase, the final artist will be chosen through a public vote that will take place at the North Common ball field ribbon-cutting event, giving the community a voice in selecting the winning design.
Eligible artists must be practicing artists based in Lowell, MA. The project offers a unique opportunity to create public art that will be viewed by countless visitors to North Common throughout the year.
An optional virtual information session is scheduled for Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at 5:00 PM via Microsoft Teams. This session is designed for artists to ask questions, clarify project requirements, and learn more details about the opportunity.
Full project details, eligibility requirements, timeline, and complete application instructions are available on the city's Art in the Park webpage. Artists should carefully review all requirements before submitting their qualifications.
