Oracle Library Volunteer Artist Recognition

Honor volunteer artists who contributed to Oracle Library's community mural project celebrating local history and culture.

The Oracle Library is honoring the volunteer artists who contributed to its iconic community mural wall, completed in 1995. This collaborative public art project was initiated by Martin Salter and brought together numerous talented individuals to paint murals depicting Oracle's rich history and culture.

The mural themes include the natural environment before human settlement, Native American heritage, Hispanic influence, ranching traditions, Oracle Environmental State Park, the local artist community, the mining industry, and Biosphere 2. Original artists included Wendy Ross, Mountain View students, San Manuel High School Art Club, Jeanne Griffin, Peggy Downing, Susan Cochran, Ann Gondor, Andy Rush, Margo Burwell, Corinna MacNiece, Jerry Parra, and Jenny Kilb.

In 2022, artist Jack Loudon volunteered to restore the weathered mural. In 2023, the Oracle Library Board decided to formally recognize all volunteers who contributed to this project over the years. A commemorative sign has been placed at the library entrance, and an Open House event is planned in the near future to acknowledge the artists and their contributions.

The Oracle Library, established in 1905, continues to operate primarily through volunteers, with assistance from the Pinal County Library District. The library currently has 25 active volunteers. This recognition event celebrates the community spirit and artistic dedication that has made the library a cherished local institution.
