Out of the Blue Whale Sculpture Mural
Salt Lake City Arts Council seeks artists to create a new mural for the iconic 'Out of the Blue' whale sculpture in the 9th and 9th neighborhood.
The Salt Lake City Arts Council is issuing a public call for artists to apply for the opportunity to create a new mural on the iconic "Out of the Blue" whale sculpture located in Salt Lake City's 9th and 9th neighborhood at 900 South and 1100 East. The massive whale sculpture, designed by artist Stephen Kesler, has become a beloved symbol of the offbeat neighborhood and a dynamic centerpiece for the community.
The original mural, titled "Point of Reference" and created by painter Mike Murdock, will be replaced with a new design as part of the Arts Council's plan to make the sculpture a rotating art installation that changes periodically. This approach ensures the whale remains a dynamic and ever-changing visual focal point for the community while preserving the historical significance of previous murals.
Artist Stephen Kesler, the original sculptor, will serve as one of the judges for submitted applications. He expressed enthusiasm about the rotating mural concept, noting that public art should invite community discussion and debate. The new mural is expected to be completed by late summer 2026.
This is an excellent opportunity for Salt Lake County artists to contribute to a high-profile public art installation that receives significant community attention and engagement. The whale has already inspired numerous community interactions, from the famous gnome community coexisting in the roundabout to the annual marathon runners who complete 630 laps around it.
Interested artists should understand that their work will be the second iteration of this evolving public art project and will contribute to the ongoing cultural conversation about public art in Salt Lake City.
