Out of the Box 2026 - Signal Box Mural Project

Carson City invites Northern Nevada artists to paint traffic signal boxes. Selected artists receive $1,000 per intersection. Submit by April 1, 2026.

Out of the Box 2026 is a public art initiative by Carson City designed to enhance the streetscape and create paid opportunities for local artists. The program invites artists to submit proposals to paint traffic signal boxes located throughout Carson City. This initiative builds on the momentum of recent public art development in the city, which has seen dozens of colorful murals painted throughout town over recent years.

The program is open to all local artists living in Northern Nevada, with special encouragement for young and/or new artists. Notably, a resume or portfolio is not required for submission, making this an accessible opportunity for emerging artists. Selected artists will receive $1,000 per intersection, which covers artist compensation, supplies, materials, and installation costs.

To participate, interested artists must submit public art proposals via the "Out of the Box 2026" form by the April 1, 2026 deadline. Selected artists (or their parent/guardian if under 18) must provide a W-9 form and an invoice, and be able to receive payment by check.

This is an excellent opportunity for Northern Nevada artists to gain paid experience in public art, contribute to community beautification, and have their work displayed prominently throughout Carson City. The $1,000 compensation per intersection provides meaningful support for artists while allowing them to showcase their talents in a high-visibility public setting.
