Owen Sound Art Banner Exhibit 20th Anniversary

Call for artists to submit work for the Owen Sound Art Banner Exhibit's 20th anniversary in 2026. Public art display featuring 75 banners.

The Owen Sound Art Banner Exhibit is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2026 and is now accepting artist submissions for this major public art initiative. Since its inception in 2006, the Banner Exhibit has showcased over 1,500 works by more than 1,000 artists, establishing itself as the largest continuous public art display in the region.

The exhibition features approximately 75 art banners displayed prominently along the Owen Sound harbourfront and in the Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library each summer, transforming public spaces with vibrant, original artwork. The 2026 cycle will mark two decades of continuous display, making it an exceptionally significant milestone for the community.

Urban Easel, the volunteer group managing the initiative since 2024, is encouraging submissions from artists of all skill levels. The call for artists has opened earlier than the traditional November/December timeline to allow more preparation time and better planning for production.

New features introduced under Urban Easel's management include 10 banners reserved specifically for community organizations that incorporate art into their programming, and a dedicated "Artist of Distinction" banner. The 2026 Artist of Distinction nominations are currently being accepted, recognizing exceptional contributions to the exhibit.

Organizers emphasize the positive impact of public art on community well-being, stating "Public art has a profoundly positive effect on the well-being of a community." The extended submission timeline reflects their commitment to supporting local artists and ensuring quality production of the banner displays.

Artists interested in participating should visit the Urban Easel website to register and submit their work. Community members are also encouraged to help promote the initiative through social media sharing and word-of-mouth.
