Patrick Maxcy Mural Artist Selection - Past Opportunity

Artist selection for 'Abundant Waters' mural at JEA pump station. 70 applicants competed for this public art commission.

This article documents a completed mural project rather than an open opportunity. However, it provides valuable insight into how Riverside Avondale Preservation (RAP) selects artists for public art commissions. The 'Abundant Waters' mural project involved a seven-week call for artists that attracted 70 applicants. Patrick Maxcy was ultimately selected to create a 17-by-90-foot mural depicting wildlife, flora and fauna connected to the St. Johns River at the JEA pump station beneath the Fuller Warren Bridge. The project was led by RAP Creative Placemaking Specialist Kandice Clark and funded by Haskell, the PNC Foundation, the Jacksonville Environmental Protection Board, and Haymaker Coffee Co. The artist spent over 100 hours on the work and incorporated interactive elements, including 10 hidden hearts throughout the design. The mural was unveiled on December 12, 2024, as part of RAP's placemaking goals to improve the community for residents and visitors. For future similar opportunities, artists should monitor RAP's announcements and follow their social media channels for upcoming calls for artists in public art and placemaking initiatives.
