Public Artwork Commission - Dr. Jeremiah Cameron Park

Kansas City seeks professional visual artists to design and install permanent public artwork celebrating the Steptoe Neighborhood's rich history.

Kansas City's One Percent for Art Program is seeking qualifications from professional visual artists or artist teams to design, fabricate, and install a permanent public artwork at Dr. Jeremiah Cameron Park. The artwork will celebrate the rich history of the Steptoe Neighborhood and the Penn School, recognized as the first African American school west of the Mississippi River. This project offers a unique opportunity to tell the story of a community that helped shape Kansas City's cultural and educational heritage. Between two and five semifinalist artists will advance to the Request for Proposals (RFP) phase and receive a $4,200 design proposal stipend. This is a significant opportunity for artists to create meaningful public art that honors an important historical community and contributes to Kansas City's cultural landscape. The selection process begins with a qualifications review, followed by the RFP phase for selected semifinalists. Virtual Q&A sessions are available for interested artists to learn more about the project requirements and vision. Questions about the project should be directed to the KCMO Public Art Administrator.
