Recognition & Recollection Exhibition
Submit artwork exploring mental health, memory, and Alzheimer's awareness. Exhibition runs Jan 8 - Feb 28 at Cowichan Performing Arts Centre.
The Cowichan Valley Arts Council (CVAC) is partnering with CVRD Arts & Culture, South Cowichan Arts Guild, Arts at Cowichan Lake, Arts Council of Ladysmith, and Chemainus Valley Cultural Arts Society to present the 'Recognition & Recollection Exhibition.' This collaborative initiative celebrates the intersection of art and health, with a special focus on January being Alzheimer's Awareness Month in Canada.
The exhibition recognizes that art has profound healing benefits for people with Alzheimer's and their families, while also addressing broader mental health themes. Artists are invited to submit work exploring these themes: mental health challenges, memory, consciousness and the self, Alzheimer's and cognitive decline, art as health advocacy, mental health and complex social issues, and states of being.
The exhibition will be displayed in the lobby of the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre from January 8 through February 28, expecting approximately 8,000 patrons during this period. A grand opening reception on January 8 will feature local politicians, media, and community members to celebrate this imaginative initiative that highlights the significance of art and culture on mental health and human experience.
The goal is to accommodate as many artists as possible within available space. However, space for free-standing 3D works is extremely limited, so interested artists should contact CVAC staff for consideration. All submissions will be reviewed and selected based on space availability and received on a first-come, first-served basis.
