Richmond Utility Box Art Wrap Installation
Local artists selected to have their artwork installed as custom wraps on 24 TxDOT utility boxes throughout Richmond's historic district.
The city of Richmond has undertaken a streetscape enhancement initiative to transform 24 TxDOT utility boxes throughout the city with custom art wraps. This project aims to enhance the visual character of Richmond's streets and reinforce the city's commitment to beautification.
Local Catapult Gallery owner and artist Carmen Flores helped lead the call for local artists to submit artwork for potential installation on the utility boxes in the historic district. The Richmond Historic Commission and the Parks and Recreation Board reviewed submissions and selected seven pieces from five local artists: Carmen Flores, Elizabeth Marie, Sarah Beth Baca, Michelle Florence, and Sydney Archer.
Each selected piece has been produced and installed as a vibrant wrap around a utility box in the historic district and around the city. The installation project has already been completed, with visitors able to scan QR codes displayed on these installations to learn more about each artist through brief interviews embedded online.
The remaining 17 art wraps were chosen by the Parks Board from a selection of designs provided by staff. These art-wrapped utility boxes contribute to Richmond's visual appeal and have helped the city earn the 2025 Scenic City of the Year designation from Scenic Texas. Mayor Becky Haas expressed appreciation for the local artists' willingness to share their talent with city residents and visitors to historic Downtown Richmond.
