Roman J. Witt Residency 2026-2027

12-week artist residency at University of Michigan offering $20,000 honorarium plus housing, studio space, and up to $10,000 in materials funding.

The Roman J. Witt Residency is a prestigious opportunity offered by the University of Michigan's Stamps School of Art & Design in partnership with the U-M Institute for the Humanities. This program supports artists and designers in the production of new work while fostering creative partnerships across the university community.

The residency awards one position per academic year to a visiting artist or designer who will create new work at the school while actively engaging with both students and faculty. Residents are expected to participate in direct interactions with the university community through various formats including collaborative studio work, artist talks, public lectures, workshops, student critiques, and open studio hours.

Benefits include a $20,000 honorarium for up to twelve weeks of residence served over an academic year, housing accommodations, dedicated studio space, and up to $10,000 in materials, research, and development funding. Applications are welcomed from both established and emerging artists, as well as artist collectives and creative teams, though awards to teams will be shared among members.

The ideal candidate values collaboration, possesses strong communication skills, and is interested in generating creative partnerships across disciplines. The program seeks to foster an atmosphere of inventive creative activity throughout the university community. Applicants should be prepared to engage meaningfully with students and faculty and demonstrate commitment to community engagement.
