Roman Witt Residency at University of Michigan

12-week residency with $20,000 honorarium, housing, studio space, and $10,000 in materials funding for artists and designers.

The Roman J. Witt Residency Program at the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design supports the production of new work by both established and emerging artists and designers. One residency is awarded each academic year.

Residents receive a $20,000 honorarium for up to 12 weeks in residence, plus housing, studio space, and up to $10,000 in materials, research, and development funding. The 2026-27 Witt Residency is organized in partnership with the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities.

During the residency, artists are expected to actively engage with the Stamps School of Art & Design and Institute for the Humanities communities through direct interaction with students and faculty. The Institute for the Humanities provides access to their contemporary gallery as an installation and project space, known for its progressive approach to critical inquiry and commitment to social practice.

The residency timeline includes remote planning sessions during Fall 2026, on-site work in Ann Arbor during Winter 2027, with exhibition opening in Fall 2027. Residents also present in the Penny Stamps Speaker Series.

Previous residents include performance artist Stacey Kirby (2025) and interdisciplinary artist Holly Bass (2026).
