Santa Maria Transit Center Mural Project
Santa Maria seeks artists to create a bold digital mural celebrating cultural diversity and community pride at the Transit Center.
The Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department is inviting artists to submit proposals for the Santa Maria Transit Center Mural Project. The Transit Center, located at 400 Boone St., serves as a vital hub of movement and connection for city residents and visitors. The city envisions a vibrant digital mural that celebrates Santa Maria's cultural diversity, history, and sense of community pride. Once completed, the mural will transform the exterior wall of the Transit Center into a bold visual landmark in the heart of downtown Santa Maria.
The selected artist will receive a stipend to create a high-resolution, print-ready design suitable for large-scale vinyl reproduction and installation on aluminum panels. The city will oversee all production and installation costs, eliminating financial burden from the artist. Dennis Smitherman, Recreation Services manager, states: "This project offers artists a unique opportunity to bring color, creativity, and local identity to one of our city's busiest public spaces. We're looking for designs that capture Santa Maria's movement, diversity, and welcoming spirit."
This call is open to both professional and emerging artists living in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties. Priority consideration will be given to artists living or working in Santa Maria or whose work reflects the community's cultural heritage. This is an excellent opportunity for artists to gain public recognition and contribute meaningfully to their community while receiving compensation for their creative work.
