Sculpture Garden at Industrial Arts 2026
Akimbo invites artists to submit proposals for temporary public sculptures at Industrial Arts in Markham, Ontario with a $15,000 CAD budget.
The Akimbo Sculpture Garden Program is seeking professional artists to create temporary public sculptures for display at Industrial Arts in Markham, Ontario from May to November 2026. This program activates the front lawn as a space for creative experimentation, public engagement, and dialogue between art and industry.
Selected artists will receive a $15,000 CAD budget (plus HST/GST) to cover all project costs including artist fees, materials, fabrication, transport, installation, de-installation, insurance, and maintenance. The exhibition platform is an 18 x 18 ft raised platform with surrounding lawn also available for use.
Artists are encouraged to create work that engages the community, responds to the industrial setting, and encourages interactivity. Proposals may include new works, adaptations of existing pieces, or industrial/found material-based concepts. All sculptures must be durable against strong winds, heavy rain, and fluctuating temperatures, with optional winter tolerance.
The program welcomes professional artists working in sculpture or public art. Selection will be based on artistic merit, feasibility within budget and site constraints, potential for public engagement, and alignment with program goals. Proposals are reviewed by the curator, director, and Steelcase Art Projects board.
Notified artists will enter a design development period from February to April 2026, with installation in early May. The exhibition runs through November 2026, with possible winter extension for weather-tolerant works.
