Suffolk Sketches Drawing Derby
Fast-paced drawing event bringing 40 local artists together with 2-hour time limits to create artwork, raising funds for ForKids food pantry.
Suffolk Sketches Drawing Derby is a new fast-paced, interactive drawing showcase hosted by Suffolk Parks and Recreation at the old SunTrust building. The event brings together local artists who have a two-hour time limit to produce as much artwork as possible. Each piece is priced at $50, with half the proceeds going to the artist and half donated to the ForKids food pantry. The event was inspired by the Monster Drawing Rally in Richmond and was organized by Jennifer Lucy, cultural arts coordinator for the Suffolk Art Gallery. The first edition brought together 40 participating artists, with some invited and others joining through an open call. In addition to individual artwork sales, the event featured a community drawing component led by artist Andy Harris. Participants contributed to a large floor canvas with a prompt about cute and weird animals being released in the city, though artists were encouraged to follow their own creative direction. The event served as both a fundraising initiative and an outreach effort for the Suffolk Art Gallery, connecting with numerous local artists and community members interested in participating in future events.
