Surfers Point Public Art Tiled Sculpture

City of Ventura seeks professional artists to create permanent tiled sculpture for coastal restoration project. $165,000 budget.

The City of Ventura invites professional artists or artist teams to submit proposals for the creation of a permanent tiled sculpture or sculptural installation as part of Phase II of the Surfers Point Improvement Project. This is a significant opportunity to contribute to one of the country's leading examples of coastal restoration.

Project Theme: Based on community surveys and workshops, the artwork theme combines Marine Life and Surf & Beach Culture. The sculpture should serve as a cultural and ecological narrative, visually connecting visitors to coastal marine life, beach and surf culture. Artists are encouraged to use a color palette of natural coastal tones.

Budget and Scope: The total budget for this public art project is $165,000. This inclusive amount must cover all costs associated with design, fabrication, transportation, and installation of the artwork.

Eligibility: This opportunity is open to artists residing and working in the State of California. Special consideration will be given to artists based in Ventura County and Santa Barbara County.

Project Context: This public art installation is part of the larger Surfers Point Phase II Project, funded by a $16.2 million grant from the California State Coastal Conservancy. The major coastal improvement effort unites environmental restoration, public access, and cultural enrichment at one of Ventura's most iconic shoreline destinations, with the goal of enhancing safety for beachgoers and protecting the shoreline from erosion.

The selected artwork will serve as a signature feature of the site, welcoming residents and visitors from around the world.
